Presidents Message

                                       Centre Update 28th August 2024

As the new season is fast approaching, your Board has been busy and we are pleased to update you with the progress on the following initiatives.

BowlsHub

When we started this process just under a month ago, we had 177 Bay of Plenty members registered onto BowlsHub.  Today, we are happy to report we have registered a total of 299 members to BowlsHub and we are still counting!  This has been a phenomenal effort and we are extremely grateful for those clubs and members that have taken on this initiative.  The Junior Optional Pairs have just closed and the Men’s and Women Trips are still open.

Once a draw is completed, you will receive an email with the link to the draw. We have posted the link to the draw on our website!

Please note that if you have forwarded your name in the bulk upload through your club and still want to enter a tournament, you will have to do this individually.  Go to our Facebook or Website page for instructions on how to do this.

Special mention needs to be made to Gary Bodger who has been instrumental in assisting in getting this project up and running.

Bay of Plenty Selectors and Coaches

We are pleased to advise that we appointed the Bay of Plenty Selectors and / or Coaches and we held a meeting with the team to go through the feedback from the survey sent out.

We are committed to listening to all parties and we hope that you will see some positive development in this area for the new season.  We intend to send out a survey after every fixture – please note this will be separate to your player / coach feedback.   The survey will be collated and anonymous to allow us to give feedback to your selectors and coaches about how you felt the tournament was run, improvements, suggestions, recommendations, accolades.

The first training day for reps is scheduled for 1st September 2024 at Matua Bowling Club and I am looking forward to meeting the individuals involved.

I would like to thank those individuals that have committed to training, coaching, developing and selecting the teams for the new season.

Our Premier Coach and Selectors

Gayle Melrose, Mary Campbell, Margaret Davies

Our Development Coach and Selectors

Robyn Davis, Pat Andrews

Our 1-5 Coach and Selectors

Janice Paap, Regg Martin

Uniforms for Rep Bowlers

We are in the process of looking at a new uniform for the BOP Representatives – once we have a few designs and pricing, we are going to seek a grant to cover the costs of the uniforms.

Handbook

The Centre Handbook is well advanced and will be available just as soon as possible.  In the meantime, all of the event schedule information you require is on our website.

New Constitution and Regulations

Rob Warrender and Margaret O’Regan are working through these documents for the Centre.  We will be holding a working meeting later in September to finalise any changes and then the goal will be to send out the DRAFT to all clubs for feedback within a certain timeframe and if the schedule permits, we will hold a Special General Meeting to have the new Constitution approved by members.

Livestreaming

We are in the process of an equipment review and discussing options with those previously involved – watch this space.  We are very keen to get this up and running.

Hosting of Centre Events

All clubs have been emailed an expression of interest form for holding Centre events – can you please ensure that you complete these and return to the office at your earliest convenience.

Hosting of National Events in 2026/2027

The Centre will be making an application to Bowls New Zealand to host the Open Fours and Mixed Pairs in 2026 (19th – 26th February 2026)  and at the same time for 2027 (18th – 25th February 2027).

We will be sending out all clubs’ expressions of interest forms to have games hosted at their venue.

Host Club expression of interest forms will be included along with the criteria clubs need to meet to be the host club for National events.

Greenkeepers Association

We have an intention to communicate with the Greenkeepers Association and reintroduce grading of greens for events and finals.

PBA Hosted in the Bay

For the first time in the Bay of Plenty, we hosted PBA.  This was hosted by Tauranga South and good comments received by a lot of out of town bowlers who have indicated they will be returning next year.  Congratulations to George Stanisich (Tauranga South) who won the Shanghai Singles, Anthony Quellette (Tauranga South) and Chris Smith (Omokoroa) who won the World Pairs and who will be representing the Bay in New Plymouth this weekend.

In addition Andre Hudson (Tauranga South) won the UK Singles and Terry Leadbetter (Tauranga South) won the 2nd Ranking Singles.

1-8 Short Form Power Pairs

It was great to see all the rinks at Tauranga South filled with our 1-8 year bowlers competing in a 3Five format tournament organised by Short Form Bowls.  The tournament concluded with Mike Staite (Ngongotaha) and Terry Leadbetter (Tauranga South) coming third, Lynn Bodger and Lorraine Rowling (Mount Maunganui) in second and Regan Williams and Ronnie Dinsdale (Te Puke) coming out on top as our winners.  Regan and Ronnie will now compete in the National Finals event held in New Lynn 7-8 September2024 and we wish them the best of luck!

Youth Bowls

We had a second workshop for those interested to get involved with Youth Bowls on Saturday 24th August which was successful in getting people qualified and geared up for the season.  Now that we have had certificates completed for a majority, we are ready to start contacting schools to get this off the ground.  Tournaments are to be confirmed this season, BUT please support this initiative and watch the numbers grow!  Drew Crowhurst and Julie Kerrie will advise all clubs participating on the dates once confirmed.  A big thank you to these two individuals for pursuing this and getting it off the ground.

Communication with Board Members

At present we encourage all clubs to use our central email address which is bowlsbop1@gmail.com

Any communication will be filtered to the correct individual involved.
